From Reductionism to Systems Thinking
Scientific and engineering progress often begins by breaking down individual components (reductionism), but when boundary effects, nonlinear interactions, and emergent properties become dominant, we must shift to modeling the whole system. This is not a rejection of reductionism, but rather an acknowledgment that complex systems' behavior cannot be fully derived from component-level analysis alone.
