Platform Fragmentation & Unified Interface Layer
As an ecosystem expands across multiple hardware forms (phones, watches, glasses, tablets), the cost of maintaining consistent developer and user experiences grows exponentially. System designers typically create an abstraction layer in software—using unified APIs and design languages to hide underlying hardware differences. This is fundamentally an economic, not technical, problem: the marginal benefit of unification diminishes while the communication cost of fragmentation increases.
