Moat in Unstructured Environments
In standardized environments (factories, warehouses), economies of scale and capital intensity determine competitive advantage. But in unstructured, highly variable environments (underwater, deep space, disaster zones), the moat shifts from 'scale' to 'adaptability'—meaning a system's robustness across heterogeneous scenarios, engineering depth, and accumulated field experience. These companies' competitive advantages cannot be replicated through capital alone, as they require sustained trial-and-error and domain expertise accumulation.
