To gain public acceptance, new technologies often bind themselves to existing symbols of authority—history, culture, moral high ground—to claim "I am not a disruptor, but a continuation." The success of this narrative depends on how firmly cultural consensus is held: the stronger the consensus, the more easily the narrative can be exposed and provoke backlash.
