Goodhart's Law / The Measure Becomes the Target
When a metric is adopted as a measure of performance, it loses its validity as a measure—because people optimize for the metric itself rather than the underlying objective. As statistician Charles Goodhart originally stated: 'Any statistical relationship that is exploited for control purposes will tend to collapse once pressure is placed on it.'
