Base Effect and Growth Rate Illusion
When the base period is abnormally depressed, subsequent growth rates become dramatically inflated. High growth percentages may reflect mere recovery from a low baseline rather than genuine structural improvement in demand. Economic growth rates must always be evaluated against absolute base values; otherwise, statistics can deceive through an artificially elevated numerator and a depressed denominator.
