Vertical Integration Competency Trap
A phenomenon where market-leading companies, after achieving dominance in one segment, integrate upstream and downstream operations to protect market share, only to be outcompeted by specialized rivals who excel at a single point. The integrated player loses overall competitiveness as specialists innovate faster in their focus areas. Classic examples: General Motors' vertically integrated parts manufacturing was defeated by Toyota's modular supply chain; Intel's simultaneous chip design and manufacturing was disrupted by specialist players TSMC and ARM, who fragmented the market.
