Innovation Under Constraint
When a technical system faces multiple conflicting objectives (such as volume, torque, and cost), innovation does not mean optimizing infinitely along a single dimension. Instead, it involves shifting the fundamental architectural paradigm to advance multiple dimensions simultaneously within the constraints. These constraints force designers to abandon linear optimization thinking, paradoxically unlocking nonlinear breakthroughs.
