The Consolidation Paradox
In a mature market with stagnant growth, declining profit margins drive companies to pursue mergers and consolidation, appearing as natural selection favoring the fittest. Yet consolidation itself deepens overcapacity, stifles innovation, and traps the industry in a vicious cycle: industry bailouts → accumulated excess capacity → further profit erosion → renewed consolidation pressure.
